The Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) on Tuesday hosted an interactive session, 'Why Smart Investors Choose France?', in association with Business France, a division of the French Embassy in India. Sources in CII said France is actively inviting Indian businessmen to invest in the country in a bid to showcase itself as an attractive destination for entrepreneurs and companies focusing on innovation.

With the benefit of its strategic location in Europe, France is also projecting itself as a gateway to Europe. Sources that attended the seminar said France is trying to replace Britain to attract companies intending to serve the European market. "Even language is not a barrier as English is well established in France," said an expert.

The country is at the receiving end of the recent tariff war initiated by the Donald Trump administration in the United States. So Indian companies, willing to invest in these sectors, will also be in the same boat, said another source. However, there are hopes that things would settle soon.

France has earlier participated in Vibrant Gujarat Summits and will also participate in the upcoming summit to be held in January 2019. Gujarat has a share of about 5% in total French Foreign Direct Investment in India. Mumbai and Bengaluru have a lion's share of 30% each followed by NCR with 20% share.

Representatives of local companies, who attended the seminar said that France is relaxing labour laws to balance them in favour of employers, especially to attract investments in technology-intensive sectors.

France was also projected as an attractive destination for startups. The country has 71 clusters for innovation. French companies, education institutes, and innovative startups are working jointly in these clusters. Over 500 projects are being taken up at these clusters.
