Purple tea from Arunachal Pradesh sold for Rs 24,501 at a tea auction in Guwahati.

The tea price comes months after a kilogram of tea in Guwahai tea auction centre fetched Rs 39,001 in a pan-India auction system.

The tea was sold by Contemporary Brokers Private Limited and bought by Dugar Consumer Products Private Limited. It was produced by Donyi Polo's estate, India Today reported.

"The tea, a product of wild vegetation, comes with health benefits like fighting cancer, building immunity and is also great for a healthy heart. Once believed to be from Kenya, this rare tea actually originated in Assam. The study that found the purple tea's origination was conducted by Tocklai Tea Research Institute," a report in The Telegraph said.

The fascinating and unique reddish-purple colour of the brew comes from the high levels of a flavonoid called Anthocyanin found in the leaves, which is a flavonoid robust with antioxidants, the report added.
