Former Tata Finance managing director Dilip Pendse, 61, allegedly committed suicide by hanging at his office in Matunga on Wednesday afternoon, citing "personal reasons" in his suicide note.

The Matunga Police have registered an Accidental Death Report (ADR) in the matter, as per routine procedure in cases of suicide.

According to the police, Pendse resided with his wife on the first floor of Royal Grace building at Rathi Mala, Hindu Colony, and also had an office in the same building.

He was found hanging from a ceiling fan in this office by his wife and a carpenter who had been called to break open the office door.

The police said that at around 9:30 am on Wednesday, Pendse went down to his office as usual, but did not return home for lunch in the afternoon. Surprised at this, Pendse's wife Anuradha went down to the office to call him up for lunch, only to find that the office door was locked from inside. When there was no response from inside, Anuradha got suspicious and broke open the door with the help of a carpenter at around 2:30 pm, and found him dead.

The police was then immediately alerted and Pendse's body was taken to Sion Hospital by the police, where he was declared dead before admission.

The police said that they found a suicide note in which Pendse has cited 'personal reasons' as the reason behind the suicide, and has absolved all of any blame for his death.

'I am committing suicide due to issues in my personal life. No one is responsible for my suicide' – Pendse wrote in the suicide note, and asked his wife and sons to 'forgive' him, the police said.

In June, 2016, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) had barred Pendse and three other entities from the capital market for alleged illegal stock transactions at the time of the Tata Finance's rights issue of shares in 2001. This was after SEBI had initiated a probe in October 2002 on a complaint against Pendse from Tata Finance.

Following its investigations, SEBI had issued Pendse a show cause notice in April 2009. It later also passed an order against Pendse in December 2012. After Pendse challenged this order, Securities Appellate Tribunal (SAT) quashed the SEBI directive in April 2014 and asked the regulator to pass a fresh order on merits and in accordance with law.

'We have registered an ADR, and the body was sent for a post mortem to Sion hospital. We suspect that Pendse's suicide was pre-meditated, as he hung himself with a rope that he took to his office in advance. We will record statements of Pendse's family members and will also scrutinise the footage from nearby CCTV cameras to ascertain whether anyone else visited the office on Wednesday," said Balasaheb Kakad, Senior Police Inspector of Matunga Police Station.

Pendse has two sons, both of whom have been residing abroad for the past few years.
