Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday praised India Inc and his government’s hard work in ensuring India’s entered the list of the Top-100 nations in the World Bank’s Ease of Doing Business list. PM Modi also criticized the opposition for constantly making negative statements on India’s ranking.

“This report has not taken into account implementation of Goods and Services Tax. With GST we are moving towards modern tax-regime. India has reached a position from where it is easier to improve further. Our efforts have gathered momentum,” the PM said, while speaking at India’s Business Reforms event in New Delhi.

The Prime Minister also criticized the opposition for their negative comments on the World Bank report. “Some people do not understand the value of the increase in ranking. It makes no difference to them. Some of these people have been employees of the World Bank, and they are questioning India’s ranking,” PM Modi said, adding that these elements did not want to do any work, but for questioning those who did work.

"I have one job. To ensure India moves ahead, and that this movement impacts the lives of crores of people positively," the PM said.

Earlier, India jumped 30 places to 100th rank in the World Bank's 'ease of doing business' ranking, helped by a slew of reforms in taxation, licensing, investor protection and bankruptcy resolution.

Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley made the announcement in an official press conference. Implementation of GST was not incorporated while compiling the report, according to the World Bank.

Jaitley also said India is the only major economy, which the World Bank has hailed for making structural changes. This is the highest jump of rank for any country in this year's report. In 6 out of 10 indicators, India has improved its ranking. In 3 parameters, India has improved in 9 out of 10 indicators. In 3 indicators, India is in the top 30.

Tax compliance has been a big focus of the Modi government and it has been recognised by the World Bank.
