Damages to a key transmission line in Odisha due to Titli cyclone has resulted in a surge in electricity cost on the power exchange. The power cost on Monday doubled to Rs 10.40 per unit from the average cost of Rs 5 per unit.

The Talcher-Kolar Bipole transmission line developed a snag following the complete outage of Srikakulam substation last week. It adversely affected the supply to southern states, particularly Tamil Nadu, Telangana and parts of Andhra Pradesh.

These states are bearing the brunt of load shedding despite the availability of ample power in West Bengal, Odisha and other states as they are unable to procure electricity due to transmission constraints.

Indian Energy Exchange Director (Business Development) Rajesh Mediratta told DNA, "The high prices in southern region is due to both coal shortage and network constraints that have arisen because of outage of major transmission lines. This is a double whammy for Tamil Nadu, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh."

Sources in the National Load Despatch Centre confirmed that few southern states are suffering due to disruption in supply following the damage to the transmission lines. Telangana wanted to buy 2,000 MW on power exchange, but could get 1,000 MW. Similarly, against its requirement of 500 MW, Tamil Nadu had to struggle to get that much power. Andhra Pradesh had proposed to buy 700 MW though it could get 600 MW.

Sources said the PowerGrid Corporation, which is the central transmission utility, has launched a massive restoration work and hopes to complete it by Tuesday or latest by October 18. A PowerGrid Corporation official admitted that Titli had damaged the transmission network temporarily impacting supply.
