Doritos, which is owned by PepsiCo, has landed in controversy after it announced a ‘lady-friendly’ version of their snack, which is quieter to eat and costs less money.

In an interview with Freakonomics Radio, PepsiCo CEO Indra Nooyi said, ““Although women would love to crunch [chips] loudly, lick their fingers and pour crumbs from the bag into their mouth afterwards, they prefer not to do this in public.

“You watch a lot of the young guys eat the chips, they love their Doritos, and they lick their fingers with great glee, and when they reach the bottom of the bag they pour the little broken pieces into their mouth, because they don’t want to lose that taste of the flavor, and the broken chips in the bottom.

“Women would love to do the same, but they don’t. They don’t like to crunch too loudly in public. And they don’t lick their fingers.

“It’s not a male and female as much as ‘are there snacks for women that can be designed and packaged differently?’ And yes, we are looking at it, and we’re getting ready to launch a bunch of them soon,” she was quoted as saying, as reported by the New York Post.

Nooyi, however, clarified that it wasn't a 'male and female thing'. "It was more “are there snacks for women that can be designed and packaged differently?” Because women love to carry a snack in their purse," she added.

Naturally, the product has not gone down well with Twitterati and people have made their voice heard.

Women’s campaigners have slammed the unusual move as a tried gender stereotype.”

A spokesman from the Women’s Equality Party said: “Companies that perpetuate these tried gender stereotypes will continue to lose out on the single biggest consumer group: women.”

"In response to Doritos lady friendly crisps I shall be eating the biggest crisps I can find crunching really loudly burping and carrying a packet of crisps as a handbag," said Twitter user Kate Ford, while Danielle Sepulveres said, "Has anyone at Doritos ever met a lady?"

Realising that the campaign did not go as expected, Doritos said, “We already have Doritos for women — they’re called Doritos, and they’re loved by millions.”
