Bharti Airtel, the prime sponsor of Delhi half marathon warned against pulling out of the event over rising air pollution concerns in the city.

"We have received a lot of feedback from our customers and citizens at large expressing concern on holding the marathon in view of the prevailing air pollution in the city," the company said.

"Air pollution poses serious health risks and it is important that these concerns are addressed urgently and appropriately by the authorities for AirtelBSE -1.59 % to continue associating with the event next year and beyond," it added.

It's been over a decade of Airtel's association with the event. Airtel also stated that it had discussed the air quality issue with the organizers, Procam.

Procam assured Airtel that it is taking several measures to minimize the impact of air pollution on the runners.

A team of professionals is being deployed by Procam before the race day to sprinkle salt mixed with effluent treated water across the entire track to ensure that the dust pollution is negated. Furthermore, no vehicles will be plying on the route of the marathon," it said.

Meanwhile, the constant detoriating air quality in the capital had forced some private schools to suspend their morning activities. On Saturday, Sanskriti School sent a message to parents, saying, "Please note that due to the high pollution levels/ unfavourable weather conditions in Delhi, the morning sports practice has been suspended for a few days…".

Reeling under 'very poor' air quality with toxins for the last one month, Delhi on Sunday saw pollution levels 12 to 19 times the permissible limit during morning hours.
