Delhi airport to see investment of Rs 9,000 crore to boost capacity

The Delhi airport is expected to witness a boost in its capacity with an investment of nearly Rs 9,000 crore, Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu said Tuesday.

The Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) in the national capital is operated by DIAL -- a consortium of GMR Group, Airports Authority of India (AAI) and Germany's Fraport. It is the busiest aerodrome in the country.

Naidu said Delhi airport will see an investment of about Rs 9,000 crore to boost capacity and handle 100 million passengers per annum.

He was speaking here after unveiling two publications about Delhi airport.

Minister of State for Civil Aviation Jayant Sinha said the Delhi airport is expected to handle 70 million passengers in 2018 and the numbers would touch up to 11 crore (110 million) the coming years.

He also said that the airport employs over 1 lakh people directly and another 5 lakh people indirectly.

Naidu unveiled two publications -- 'The Economic Impact of Delhi Airport' and a Coffee Table Book (CTB) on 10-year journey of Delhi airport. 

Meanwhile, Mumbai may be the financial capital of the country, but when it comes to travel, Delhi and Dubai have been the most preferred destination. Data provided by the Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) has revealed that of the total domestic and international passenger traffic to and from Mumbai airport between April 2018 and August 2018, maximum fliers flew between the Mumbai-Dubai and Mumbai-Delhi sectors.

As per the data, out of total 6.08 million international passengers that flew in and out of Mumbai Airport between April 2018 and August 2018, a majority of them travelled to Dubai followed by London, Singapore, Bangkok and Abu Dhabi. The Dubai-bound traffic share stood at 1.02 million. In case of domestic travel, nearly 14.65 million passengers flew to and from Mumbai Airport between the same period, maximum travelled to Delhi followed by Bengaluru, Goa, Hyderabad and Chennai.
