Closing bell: Sensex closes 509 points lower, Nifty below 10,200 mark

Benchmark indices on Friday ended lower continuing the downward movement for the third straight session. The BSE Sensex ended at 33,176, down 510 points while the broader Nifty50 index settled at 10,195, down 165 points.

Among the top losers were Amtek Auto, GVK Power, Radico Khaitan, Adani Enterprises, NIIT Technologies, Oberoi Realty, Kolte-Patil, NLC India, Reliance Infrastructure, Reliance Capital, Future Enterprises, Hindustan Copper, EIL and SAIL, the shares of respective firms were down up to seven per cent. 

While MMTC, Graphite India, HEG, Canara Bank and Syndicate Bank gained up to eight per cent. 

Key indices nosedived in last hour of trade over political tension after the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) formally decided to quit the NDA government.

Coal India declined over 5.5 per cent as the shares traded ex-dividend. Coal India's board of directors had on March 10 approved payment of interim dividend for FY18 at a rate of Rs. 16.50 per share. Coal India has fixed March 19, 2018 as the record date for payment of interim dividend. Nalco was down around 1 per cent.

Weakness in Asian markets on continued worries of trade tensions due to fears over US tariffs weighed on market sentiment.

Besides, Sugar prices nose dived by Rs 100 per quintal at the wholesale market in the national capital today, dragged down by mounting stocks following relentless supplies from mills amid muted demand form bulk consumers.

Marketmen said the fall in sweetener prices was mostly attributed to huge stocks in the market on persistent supplies from mills amid higher output reports.

Meanwhile, sugar production is estimated to rise by 45 per cent to record 29.5 million tonnes in the current marketing year on the back of higher cane output, reported industry body ISMA.

The rupee edged 2 paise higher to 64.91 against the American currency in late morning deals on bouts of dollar-selling from banks and exporters.

The rupee opened lower at 64.98 against the dollar after yesterday's close of 64.93 at the inter-bank foreign exchange.
