The Government of India is considering setting up a railway line between Mumbai and Nagpur parallel to the Mumbai-Nagpur Super Expressway.

On Monday, Minister of Railway Piyush Goyal said that the ministry is trying to execute a plan for setting up railway line across various national highways and Mumbai-Nagpur is one such proposal.

“The construction of such a Hi-speed Railway Corridor will make it feasible to cover distance between Nagpur and Mumbai in just five hours,” said Goyal at Nagpur.

The distance, by train between Mumbai and Nagpur is around 830 km. The fastest of the trains between these two stations takes 11 hours.

The planned Mumbai-Nagpur Super Expressway is a 706.2-km long green field corridor, thereby cutting down the distance by over 100 kms. Furthermore, inclusion of hi-speed rails on the section will only reduce travel time.

On Monday, Indian Railways also signed a Memorandum of Understanding with MahaMetro, the metro railway company of Maharashtra for linking railway line to metro coaches on broad gauge network and creating a Mass Rapid Transit System in Nagpur city.
