The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) grilled former finance minister P Chidambaram for around four hours on Wednesday in connection with alleged irregularities in clearances to foreign investments in INX media during his tenure.

He reached at the agency headquarters at 11 am with his lawyer. Chidambaram had to walk to the CBI office after the security personnel did not allow his vehicle to enter the premises.

CBI has alleged irregularities in the clearance of foreign investment in INX Media, promoted by former media baron Peter Mukerjea and his wife Indrani. The couple is behind bars in connection with the murder of their daughter Sheena Bora.

After coming out of the CBI headquarters, Chidambaram said that he had appeared before the CBI and the FIR did not contain any allegations against him.

"Questions and answers were based on the files of the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB). Hence, there was little to add to the record," the Congress leader said on Twitter.

Chidambaram's alleged role has come under the scanner of investigating agencies in connection with the FIPB clearance of Rs 305 crore given to INX Media.

The CBI had registered an FIR on May 15 last year for alleged irregularities in the FIPB clearance to INX Media for receiving overseas funds to the tune of Rs 305 crore in 2007 when P Chidambaram was the finance minister during the UPA government.

P Chidambaram's son Karti Chidambaram was also arrested in the case for allegedly receiving funds to the tune of Rs 10 lakh.

Meanwhile, in Aircel Maxis case, Chidambaram has again been summoned by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on June 12 to join the probe.

On Tuesday, ED had grilled Chidambaram in Aircel-Maxis money laundering case.

ED had said that the FIPB approval in the Aircel-Maxis FDI case was granted in March 2006 by Chidambaram even though he was competent to accord approval on project proposals only up to Rs 600 crore and beyond that, it required the approval of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs.
