Cargo traffic at major ports rises 5% in April-September

Major ports in the country witnessed 5.12 per cent rise in cargo traffic to 343.26 million tonne (MT) in the April-September period of the ongoing financial year.

Major ports in the country witnessed 5.12 per cent rise in cargo traffic to 343.26 million tonne (MT) in the April-September period of the ongoing financial year.

"The major ports in India have recorded a growth of 5.12 per cent and together handled 343.26 MT of cargo during April-September, 2018 as against 326.54 MT handled during the corresponding period of previous year," the shipping ministry said in a statement Thursday.
Nine ports, including Paradip, Visakhapatnam and Kamarajar, registered positive growth in traffic during the reported period, the statement added.

The highest growth of 19.66 per cent was registered by Kamarajar Port, followed by Cochin at 11.51 per cent, Paradip at 11.12 per cent, Haldia at 10.07 per cent and Deendayal at 10.03 per cent, it said. During the period under review, Deendayal (Kandla) Port handled the highest volume of traffic at 58.63 MT, followed by Paradip, JNPT and Visakhapatnam, among others. 

Meanwhile, diversified port sector players will experience moderate growth in cargo in the near term amid growing container volumes as well as the impetus for coastal shipping, an Icra report said.

In the month of April, the major Indian ports put together witnessed 1.78% growth. The dozen ports handed 56.81 million tonnes of cargo as against 55.82 million tonnes during the corresponding month the previous year.

The nine ports of Kolkata (including Haldia), Paradip, Visakhapatnam, Kamarajar, Chennai, Cochin, New Mangalore, JNPT and Deendayal (formerly Kandla) have registered positive growth in traffic.

The highest growth was registered by Kolkata at 12.56%, followed by Kamarajar (12.08%), New Mangalore (11.41%), Paradip (11.12%) and Chennai (7.55%).

During April 2018, Deendayal (Kandla) Port handled the highest traffic volume of 9.32 million tonnes (16.41% share), followed by Paradip with 8.15 million tonnes (14.35% share), Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust with 5.89 million tonnes (10.37% share), Visakhapatnam with 5.13 million tonnes (9.03% share) and Mumbai with 4.98 million tonnes (8.76% share). Together, these five ports handled around 60% of major port traffic.

Commodity-wise, the highest share of cargo was of Petroleum, Oil and Lubricants at 28.30%, followed by container cargo (20.88%), thermal and steam coal (17.06%), etc.
