Budget 2018 | MPs get automatic salary revision every 5 years; President, Veep and Governor also get pay hike

In view of longstanding demand of the lawmakers, Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitely (LIVE UPDATES) on Thursday announced that the MPs would get automatic salary revision every five years.

Jaitley made the announcement during his fifth Union Budget in the Lok Sabha on Thursday. 

‘There has been considerable public debate with regard to emoluments paid to Members of Parliament. The present practice allows the recipients to fix their own emoluments which invites criticism. I am, therefore, proposing necessary changes to refix the salary, constituency allowance, other expenses payable to Members of Parliament with effect from April 1, 2018,’ Jaitley said during his speech.

However, the automatic revision of lawmakers’ salary every five years would be indexed to inflation, he added.

In another major salary revision, Jaitley also announced pay hike for President, Vice-President and Governors.

The last revision took place in 2006. The emoluments of the President will be revised to Rs 5 lakh per month, of the Vice-President to Rs 4 lakh per month and the Governors of states to Rs 3.5 lakh.
