BSNL crisis: Over 1.68 lakh employees yet to receive February salary

Troubled times countinued for BSNL employees as more than 1.68 employees of the state-own telecom firm is yet to receive their February salary. This is for the first time in 18 years that the BSNL failed to pay salaries to its staff. The employees were supposed to get their salary on the February 28. 

The situation for contractual employees in some circles is even worse as they reportedly haven’t received their salaries for the last three months, and while others haven’t received a penny since the last six months. According to a report in the Financial Express, BSNL officials said that the company has started paying February salaries now to staff in Kerala, J&K, Odisha and the corporate office. The official said further added saying that as and when the income is generated, salaries will be paid to the staff. As the government has not given any financial support, the salaries are being delayed.

Meanwhile, it's being reported that the employees’ union has written to telecom minister Manoj Sinha urging that the government release funds to the company so it can pay the salaries as well as revive the ailing firm. They have also been reportedly holding demonstrations.
 
Earlier it was reported that Loss making BSNL was mulling to cut 54,000 workers by reducing the retirement age to 58. According to a report published in Deccan Herald, BSNL will also provide voluntary retirement scheme (VRS) to its employees. 

Citing sources the report further told that in a board meeting which is scheduled on February 15, the members are likely to discuss on these points. 

If implemented, the move is likely to reduce the employee count of the BSNL by 33,568 employees which would save BSNL an estimated amount of Rs 13,895 crore over the next six years.
