Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport might become the country's first airport to have Aadhaar-enabled entry and biometric boarding system.

The push to the plan has been given by the Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), after a two-month pilot project in February.

According to various media reports, BIAL has set a 325-day deadline to enforce the new Aadhaar system.

The project in all likelihood would be implemented by March 2018.

Passengers boarding for even international flights may able to use this new system by October 2018. Project is expected to get completed by December 31, 2018.

The new system will enhance the real-time authentication of passengers, improve security, speed up clearance and reduce delays at the airport. Additionally, passengers can expect passage through various touch-points to be smooth and stress-free, eliminating the need to present their ID and boarding passes at multiple stages of the airport journey.

Meanwhile, the Government has started the process of linking the databases of airlines and airports with passenger IDs such as Aadhaar and passport numbers for the same, Times of India reported in September.

If implemented, passengers would need to give biometrics at each stage of airport process to eliminate the current practise of stamping "security checked" on physical boarding cards.

Speaking to the newspaper, aviation secretary R N Choubey said, "We have set up a special unit in Airports Authority of India for giving shape to this 'digi yatra' programme. Airport operators, especially from Bangalore and Hyderabad, are part of this as they have done a lot of work in this field. We will soon know the indicative cost of the project and time frame in which it can be implemented".
