Apple increases iPhone prices in India over 5% increase in import duty on mobiles

The increased prices will be effective from Monday.

US giant Apple has increased the prices of its flagship product iphone as the government has increased the import duty on mobile phones. After the five per cent hike, mobile phones will now be taxed at 15 per cent from earlier's 10 per cent. 

The increased prices will be effective from Monday.

With this the price of newly launched iPhone X has touched a mammoth Rs 92,430 mark. For the 64GB variant, customers have to shell out Rs 92,430 and Rs 1,05,720 for the 256GB variant. earlier, th eprices for the same were Rs 89,000 and Rs 1,02,000 respectively.

The iPhone 8 and 8 Plus will now start at MRP of Rs. 66,120 and Rs. 75,450 respectively, compared to Rs. 64,000 and Rs. 73,000 earlier. 

Talking about iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, prices of both the devices will now start at Rs 50,810 and Rs 61,060 respectively, while the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus starting price will now be Rs 41,550 and Rs 50,740 respectively.

However, iPhone SE is the only model which is unaffected by the price hike, because the company assembles it in India.

Th egovernment hiked import duty on smartphones, television sets, microwave, LED lamps and some other electronic items in a bid to protect domestic manufacturers.

Imported smartphones will cost more with customs duty on them being increased to 15% from nil now, the finance ministry said in a notification. The move will impact telecom companies that were sourcing cheap smartphones to offer bundled services to customers in a bid to capture market.

Customs duty on television sets has been doubled to 20%. LED lamps would now be charged with a 20% import duty, the notification issued on Friday night said. The tax on import of microwave ovens too has been doubled to 20%, the notification said.

Customs duty on video recording equipment as well as TV cameras has been increased to 15% from current 10%. Import duty on set top boxes has been doubled to 20%. Also, customs duty on lamps and lighting fittings including searchlights and chandeliers has been doubled to 20% while the same on electricity meters has been increased from 10% to 15%, the notification said.
