The Enforcement Directorate on Monday began its crackdown on Former Finance Minister, P.Chidambaram's son, Karti Chidambaram over allegations on him in Aircel-Maxis deal.

ED also attached Karti Chidambaram's fixed deposits and bank accounts worth Rs 1.16 crore in the money laundering case.

The agency has accused Karti of having received monetary compensation in lieu of favours granted by his father to multi-national companies during his tenure as Finance Minister.

On September 22, the CBI had claimed in the Supreme Court that a lookout notice was issued against Karti Chidambaram to prevent him from travelling abroad as he was closing several of his foreign bank accounts.

"We issued a notice and asked him how many bank accounts he has. He said only one. But what we found is that there are several accounts that he closed when he went abroad," Additional Solicitor General (ASG) Tushar Mehta told a three-judge bench led by Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra.

To support his stand, Mehta tried to submit a report in a sealed cover for the consideration of the bench that also comprised Justices AM Khanwilkar and DY Chandrachud.

However, Senior Advocate Kapil — representing Karti — objected to this saying, "These are not connected to the FIR." Only the LOC was under challenge before the apex court bench, Sibal argued.

Mehta, however, countered Sibal's contention and said the contents of the sealed cover were directly related to the case at hand, and must be perused.

"How can he file documents like this. If I have done any wrong, file FIR against me and prosecute me," Sibal said adding, "When it (the allegations in the FIR) happened, I was abroad".

The matter then took an unsavoury turn when Mehta said, "What he did when he was abroad is in these covers. Please see it".
