Aircel-Maxis case: Karti Chidambaram moves Supreme Court against summons by CBI

Former finance minister, P. Chidambaram's son, Karti Chidambaram has moved to the Supreme Court against the summons by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). 

In his petition, Karti Chidambaram said that the summons against him were illegal with a sole intention of harassing him. 

In a four-page reply to the CBI, Karti has told the agency that he has sought exemption from appearing in person. 

"The CBI and other investigative wings under the control of this current union government, from time to time, issue malicious press releases or take other coercive action driven by political vendetta in order to blatantly sensationalize and publicise this campaign against my client and family with an intent to malign their reputation," the reply to CBI drafted by Karti's advocate reads.

The Supreme Court today will hear the Karti Chidambaram’s case in connection of his alleged role in Aircel-Maxis case. 

Last month, Karti Chidambaram closed several bank accounts before the Lookout Circular (LOC) was issued against him, CBI told the apex court.

"We issued a notice and asked him how many bank accounts he has. He said only one. But what we found is that there are several accounts that he closed when he went abroad," Additional Solicitor General (ASG) Tushar Mehta told a three-judge bench led by Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra.

To support his stand, Mehta tried to submit a report in a sealed cover for the consideration of the bench that also comprised Justices AM Khanwilkar and DY Chandrachud.
