The Government, from October 4 onwards, had reduced the basic excise duty rate on petrol and diesel (both branded and unbranded) by Rs 2 per litre.

Following Gujarat, now Maharashtra has also slashed the Value Added Tax (VAT) on prices of petrol and diesel by Rs 2 and Re 1 respectively.
The new prices will be applicable from midnight.
Now from midnight, the petrol in Maharshtra will cost Rs 75.58 per litre and diesel will cost Rs 59.55.
Maharashtra charges 25% VAT on petrol in Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and Thane, while the rest of the state pays 26%.
Another BJP-ruled state, Gujarat also trimmed down VAT on fuel by 4% today.
Making the announcement, Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani today said: "After the central governments instructions, Gujarat has decided to reduce VAT on petrol and diesel by 4% from today mid-night."
The effective price of petrol in Gujarat from mid-night on Tuesday, October 10, will be Gujarat govt cuts VAT on petrol, diesel by 4% 66.53 per litre and that of diesel Gujarat govt cuts VAT on petrol, diesel by 4% 60.77 per litre, the chief minister added.
