Even as Prime Minister Narendra Modi is preparing to take centre stage on the midnight of Friday to launch the nationwide Goods and Services Tax (GST), the country's biggest tax reform, the Congress, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Left parties have decided to stay away from the special midnight meeting, convened in the historic Central Hall of Parliament.

Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley asked the representatives of Trade and Industry to ensure that all benefits arising due to implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) are passed on to the consumers in a transparent manner.

Adopting a pro-active approach ahead of the GST rollout, Jaitley held a meeting with the representatives of the trade and industry in the national capital on.

He asked the representatives of trade and industry to inform, educate and explain to their distributors, retailers and consumers at large about the positive impact of the GST especially on the price front.

Government reaches out to Congress

Union Information and Broadcasting Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu on Friday hoped the Congress Party 'realise and rethink' their stand and join the government for the midnight Parliament session.

"It's really unfortunate because they are distancing themselves from the process of reformation in the country. I hope they (Congress) realise by evening and re-think and join us in the Central Hall," Naidu said.

"I still appeal to the Congress and other parties boycotting GST event to reconsider. It's not a party function," he added.
