World Environment Day: 8 lesser celebrated Bollywood actors who have been quietly doing their bit for Mother nature

Films like Dasavathaaram (2008), Waqt (1965) and Jal (2013) have time and again highlighted the consequences of excessive exploitation of nature and although they have under-performed at the box-office, they have been great eye-openers. Like these vital, but underestimated films, there are some Bollywood celebrities whose efforts have gone unnoticed. 

On the occassion of World Environment Day, let’s have a look at these celebrities and the work they have done so far - 

Rahul Bose: The unconventional actor can be found in almost all the lists that talk about environmentalists. Bose is fighting tooth and nail against deteriorating climate. He became the Oxfam Global ambassador in 2007 in lieu of his contributions towards the environment. Bose has also founded a parent organisation called Group of Groups which has 51 charitables and NGO clusters in aamchi Mumbai, apart from his own foundation which works towards the cause of climate change.He actively participated in the Narmada Bachao Andolan as well.

Dia Mirza: The actor-activist has been appointed as the Goodwill Ambassador by the United Nations on account of her contributions to conserve the environment. As an ambassador, Mirza has time and again promoted the importance of clean air, oceans and wildlife protection. On the occasion of World Environmnet day today, Mirza launched a campaign to ban the use of single-use plastic and urged women to use biodegradable sanitary napkins.

Gul Panag: Known for her outstanding performances in films like Dor, Ab Tak Chappan 2 and Manorama Six Feet Under, Gul Panag as a part of Col. Shamsher Foundation and Gul 4 Change works on the lines of rudimentary and elemental sanitation, appropriate waste disposal and competent utilisation of natural sources of energy. She also actively promotes the installation of solar and rain harvesting systems.

Abhishek Bachchan: Abhishek Bachchan won the Green Globe award in 2012 for his efforts in fighting climate change. Since then he has been active in this field. He believes that the youth can bring about a difference in tackling climate issues.

Nandita Das: Not only is she an actor, director and writer, but also an eco-warrior. She had famously protested against advertisements on fairness products. Das works for the cause of water conservation and water harvesting. She has earlier produced and directed a short film that emphasised on the need of rain water harvesting.

John Abraham: Apart from being a fitness freak and a biker at heart, John is a nature and pet lover. He is closely associated with PETA and endorses the cosmetic brand ‘Garnier’, which helps him support a campaign that facilitates solar-powered electricity to rural India. The campaign is called ‘PowerLight A Village’. He does this without making any annoucements or sending any press releases! 

Richa Chadha: The Fukrey actress has been leading a very organic lifestyle and even prefers to wear sustainable fashion in order to prevent further harm to the environment.

Taapsee Pannu: The Pink actress was roped in for a campaign by Animal Planet on tiger conservation to generate an interest in the survival and conservation of the National Animal of India.
These actors have understood that the greatest threat to the planet is the thought that 'someone will save it', and hence they have taken it upon themselves to bring about the change!
