‘These nights will never die,’ said Avicii before fading into darkness. The Swedish DJ, remixer and record producer (originally Tim Bergling) breathed his last on April 20 in Oman. DJ Shaan, who met Avicii for the first time on his Levels tour in India in 2011, talks about the late EDM star.

“It was such a surreal moment because he was someone I have looked up to ever since I was just 16 years old. It was also my first big tour opening for such a celebrated musician. I was incredibly nervous but he smiled and told me I’d do just fine. He was a humble guy who let me spend quality time with him even though I was completely star struck. As young musicians, we can only hope to build his legacy. May his soul rest in peace.”

DJ Shaan’s favourite five tracks by the Wake Me Up hitmaker...

Seek Bromance

This one was the first ever song I heard from him and I instantly fell in love with the chord progression and the way he used his famous nexus piano — instant goosebumps and instant inspiration. I still remember coming back home from school in my car with my friends on the Bandra-Worli Sealink and going crazy to this track.

Silhouettes

I fell in love with the vocals and meaning of this song, I have probably heard it a thousand plus times over the years and have got so motivated by it. Once again, his chord progressions and melodies always take me back and amaze me.

Fade into Darkness

This song just proves that he is the king of melodies. Can’t get better than this.

Without You

I can never get over this song — one of his most recent releases. It is 100 per cent going to bring me to tears when I play it at any of my shows now.

Levels

An all-time favourite. This beats everything. It changed the way dance music industry was going and it changed a lot of peoples’ lives.
