‘Tis the season of remakes here in Bollywood. Not only are films being remade, so are songs. One such example is that of Sonakshi Sinha’s Happy Phirr Bhag Jayegi, the sequel to Happy Bhag Jayegi, which starred Diana Penty. The film released their remake of the iconic Bollywood number, Helen’s ‘Mera Naam Chin Chin Chu’, from the 1958 film, Howrah Bridge. However, we don’t know whether ‘remake’ is the appropriate term for the rendition.

The Geeta Dutt original was a fun song, with some Chinese inflections, but was pretty evidently classic Bollywood. The new one is now a Punjabi dance track, and doesn’t seem to be much different from the kind of songs that tend to go viral or skyrocket soundtracks to the top of iTunes charts. That could be a good or a bad thing, since, in terms of sound, this version sounds almost nothing like the original.

The song starts off with a Hindi-Punjabi hybrid verse, that then leads into the iconic ‘mera naam chin chin chu’ chorus. Even the chorus has been changed, with the line ‘Hello, mister, how do you do?’ being replaced by ‘Hello, mundeya, how do you do?’. Mudassar Aziz composed the lyrics of the song, which sees Jassie Gill and Sonakshi share the mic as lead vocalists. Jassie is a professional singer and is fine with his part. Sonakshi doesn’t really sound bad, but the over-production of her voice makes her sound barely human, you can’t really tell that she’s the one singing.

The song’s video keeps in line with the theme the trailer set, showing Sonakshi, Jassie, Jimmy Sheirgill and Piyush Mishra running away from someone and ending up in a Chinese club. They resort to performing the song to avoid being beheaded, and even don flashy costumes for it. Sonakshi is proving herself, slowly but surely, to be very capable at comedy, since her expressions in the background while the others sing are pretty funny.
