It's not often that one comes across an Indian bride who sports freshly-plucked hydrangeas in her hair and weds her beloved with a garland made of dusty pink roses. Also, it’s an uncommon sight to see the groom matching his safa and sherwani with the renaissance motifs on his bride’s lehenga. Saying that Virushka twinned in style would be taking a myopic view of their intimate Tuscan wedding.

There were many fine layers to the elegantly crafted destination celebrations that were steeped in traditions, yet had a ‘to-hell-with-it-all’ runaway couple vibe. And understandably so! If you’re tying the knot under the Tuscan sun, you wouldn’t want to be weighed under a 50 kg lehenga in jarring red and exaggerated embroidery. Anushka and Virat have emerged to be the coolest millennial couple, who have stunningly complemented each other and rewritten a new wedding style lexicon.

According to designer Sabyasachi’s Insta note (who dressed the couple), “Anushka was to get married in Florence. And her lehenga had to fit in. So, we chose a colour that would blend in with the whimsical Tuscan surrounding rather than stand out. It was blush pink with tropical flora and fauna, hand-embroidered in silk floss. Exotic birds and butterflies were rendered with the finest-quality needle craft. It took 67 karigars and 32 days to complete the ensemble. To complement her lehenga, beautiful jadau jewellery was handcrafted in uncut diamonds, pearls and pale pink spinel.”

Sabyasachi may have accented Anushka’s ensemble with uncut diamond and spinel choker, earrings and mathapatti, but the real hero were the lush Tuscan hydrangeas in her mane. For her engagement, Anushka picked a velvet sari in his signature Gulkand Burgundy. All she needed were kohl-rimmed eyes, red roses, and a micro dot bindi to create a multi-sensory impact. Classic with a hint of contemporary? Traditional yet a touch of hipster?

Perhaps a bit of both...

AN INSIGHT INTO THE NEW-AGE BRIDE

The Virushka wedding proves that today’s evolved brides and grooms want to have fun on their big day. They need clothing which is fuss-free, light and airy. Designer Payal Singhal observes that Anushka has given an insight into what the new-age bride wants. “She represents the millennial bride who is casual, pretty, fun and never OTT. The beauty of being in Italy is easy access to amazing flowers. The overall feel was organic and rustic. The earthy atmosphere around, the English colours and floral embroidery evoked ease, movement and simplicity. And that’s the ideology fashion is moving towards. Anushka played with deep red for her engagement in a minimal way. Also, she stuck to one designer which is quite interesting,” says Payal.

Designer Monica Shah of label Jade observes that Virat and Anushka complemented each other beautifully. “They looked lovely together and the flowers added a cool finish. Fresh colours work well for destination weddings. Also, for the engagement, they both picked dark colours and Virat’s suit complemented Anushka’s sari beautifully. The sari is a high couture garment which is very sexy and formal at the same time,” she says.

TRADITIONAL YET MODERN

The very idea of getting married in the soul-searing locales of Tuscany is a novel idea and Virushka did it in a contemporary and individual way. Stylist Aastha Sharma shares, “It was an afternoon wedding and the colours complemented the natural light. Anushka kept her make-up clean and simple. She looked comfy and came across as a fun bride who was enjoying herself. Virat, too, opted for clean cuts and there was a sense of ease and comfort about him.”

MAJOR COUPLE GOALS

A section of style arbiters opine that Virushka have become an inspiration for many in the way they’ve handled their stardom. Both of them are strong individuals and it’s great to see how they’ve conducted themselves. Designer Arpita Mehta opines that the bride and groom twinning is a great idea. “The smile on Virat’s face said it all — he coordinated his outfit with Anushka — from his Nehru jacket to the safa on his head. Anushka looked ethereal and followed the vision of the designer to the T. She opted for double-draped dupattas and uncut diamonds which went extremely well with the outfit. Also, the dusty pink of her ensemble had dark hints of pink which didn’t fade her out and the floral accessories elevated the look to another level,” says Arpita.
