In what can be called the most-awaited wedding of the year, Indian skipper Virat Kohli and Bollywood actress Anushka Sharma tied the knot in an intimate ceremony in Italy on Monday, with only close friends and family.

The couple, who have been together for more than four years now, finally took their nuptial vows. Anushka's family members – father retired Colonel Ajay Kumar Sharma, mother Ashima Sharma and brother Karnesh Sharma — and Virat's mother Saroj Kohli were at the Italian destination to bless the newlyweds. Virat and Anushka officially announced the good news, along with a wedding picture, on their social media handles on Monday around 9pm. Both tweeted two different snaps from their wedding on Twitter, "Today we have promised each other to be bound in love forever. We are truly blessed to share the news with you. This beautiful day will be made more special with the love and support of our family of fans & well wishers. Thank you for being such an important part of our journey." Anushka looked resplendent in a pink lehenga-choli designed by Sabyasachi Mukherji, and Virat matched with a sherwani of the same colour.

Anushka and Virat, both extremely private individuals, decided to shy away from the paparazzi and choose a rather remote but one of the most expensive heritage hotels in Tuscany for their destination wedding.

The pre-wedding and the wedding ceremonies took place at Borgo Finocchieto - the luxury estate in Tuscany's Buenconvento. The villa, which has a 14th century foundation, has limited space and rooms. It could only accommodate up to 44 people (22 rooms), which is also why the couple choose the place for their close-knit celebrations.

The wedding took place in true-blue Punjabi style, following all customary rituals. While their wedding was an intimate family affair, the celebrity couple plan to have a reception for their relatives in Delhi, first on December 21, followed by a lavish bash for their friends and other members of their fraternity on December 26 at one of Mumbai's luxury hotels. Invites have been sent out to everyone. The who's who from both industries are to come together for the event.

For the past few months, speculations were rife that Virushka, as the couple is popularly called by fans, will get married in December. Virat also took leave from the ongoing India-Sri Lanka series citing personal reasons. Rumour mills were further fuelled when Virat allegedly booked Anushka as his wife for the South Africa tour. Although, the cricket series kickstarts on January 5, Mr and Mrs Kohli will fly to South Africa on December 27 together, a day after their reception. Anushka will spend New Year's Eve with him and return in the first week of January to begin the next schedule of Anand L Rai's film with Shah Rukh Khan in Mumbai. Virat, on the other hand, will be playing the series in South Africa for two months, which includes three Tests, six One Day Internationals (ODIs) and three Twenty20 International (T20I) matches.

The newlyweds will shift to their new residence in Worli, Mumbai, in December once they return from Delhi.
