From 'Anaarkali of Arah' to 'Veere Di Wedding, Swara Bhasker has grabbed eyeballs for breaking the stereotype in every character she plays on the big screen.

Her latest film with Kareena Kapoor Khan, Sonam Kapoor and Shikha Talsania is not only enjoying box office success but Swara's masturbation scene where is seen using a vibrator for her pleasure is being widely discussed.  While some have applauded her courage to portray a character uninhibited about her sexual desires, some have called it cheap and unacceptable as well.

Now her mother, Ira Bhasker has come out and commented on her daughter's bold scene in 'Veere Di Wedding', In an interview to TOI, Ira Bhasker, a film historian with a Ph.D. from the Tisch School of Arts who is now is a professor of Cinema Studies at Jawaharlal Nehru University said she is proud of her daughter. Talking about cinema over the years and how sexual fantasies have been depicted till now, Swara's mother said, “Let me begin by saying that sexuality per se in Indian cinema is not a subject that has been directly expressed. At the same time, historically, our cinema is unique in the sense that it has developed, over the years, a very complex and refined idiom on eroticism. And that idiom is the song."

She further said, “A lot of things that can’t be addressed directly can be addressed through the song. Be it the Hindi film song, or the Bengali film song. Malayalam or Tamil. You don’t find this anywhere else—as a fundamental and defining feature of the form itself. A lot of the articulation was done through song. Emotional articulation. Articulation of what is tabooed. Sexuality and eroticism.”

Ira Bhasker even said that 'Veere Di Wedding' is not the first film addressing women who are sexually active as  ‘Fire’, ‘Lipstick Under My Burkha’ has also touched upon the subject in the past.
