Despite the fact that she has sung some of the most popular tracks in Bollywood projects, Shalmali Kholgade has no qualms about her voice being tried for a song. While in the city for a gig, Shalmali told DNA After Hrs, “As far as the song is for a film, I don’t mind my voice being tried, because it actually depends on how much your voice fits the character. It should be looked at as a learning process. And I am glad I realised it sooner.”

While singing reality shows on television are adding to the competition with the discovery of fresh talent and versatile voices, it doesn’t bother the singer at all. “There has always been competition. As long as your focus is on yourself and your own growth, it is absolutely fine! I believe there needs to be competition for progression,” shared the singer, who made her playback debut with the song Main Pareshan from the film Ishaqzaade.

Shalmali is delighted that people are returning to independent music, adding that her focus would have been the same had she not entered Bollywood. “These songs are not coloured by scripts or someone else’s vision, but are from your own heart and experiences, and it speaks of your flavour. I always encourage people to do independent music. Even people are enjoying independent music more these days; Harrdy Sandhu’s and Guru Randhawa’s songs are being taken into films. I also noticed some saturation in Bollywood, and this was much needed,” says Shalmali, who recently released an English song, Spark A Fire on YouTube.

With fewer songs that match the beauty of lyrics that were being written a few decades ago, the singer also wishes more people of the current generation exercise song writing. In fact, she has also been trying to add writing to her daily routine. “I am working on it... You obviously get better with practice, so I try and write every morning and have started noticing the change in it. It helps me look at things, in general, differently,” she said.

On what she loves and the one thing that she doesn’t like about the industry, Shalmali added, “We get to explore newer expressions and get to wear another person’s ideas in our voice " like I did for Pareshaan... I had not expected that I could sing a ballad. One thing that I don’t like much about the music industry is that it is too film-centric. The audience only looks at film music... But hopefully things will soon change.”

Though Shalmali has been to Jaipur many times for gigs, she got to explore it little when she was there to shoot for MTV Angels of Rock. “It was only then that we got to interact with locals and enjoyed the food here,” she shared. “The night before, we were thinking about trying laal maas. I am a big foodie and love to try new things,” she signed off.
