That’s the stand that Bollywood has taken against the recent slut-shaming of actresses like Fatima Sana Shaikh, Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra

Trolls both ‘sanskari’ and otherwise have taken it upon themselves to decide what women around them should wear. In their zealousness, they recently tried to slut-shame three of Bollywood’s leading ladies on separate occasions. The likes of which include Fatima Sana Shaikh, Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra. While Fatima was trolled for uploading a photo of herself wearing a swimsuit during Ramzan, Deepika was picked on for her bold photo shoot that was uploaded on her instagram account. The actress shared an image from her photo-shoot for a magazine, seated on a couch in high-waisted white bottoms and crop top, bold red lip colour, and Louboutin heels. PeeCee on the other hand was slammed for wearing a knee-length dress while meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Berlin. One thing that was common in all three situations was the self righteous indignation with which the trolls decided to pick on these women for choosing to wear what they want, where they want. Industry folks too have come out in support of the actresses. Here’s what they had to say on the controversy.
Trolls have no real power because they revel in anonymity to try and intimidate people. Trolls should not shape your decisions or else you play right into their hands.
These days there seems to be stiff competition among fundamentalists of all hues in trying to outdo each other in expressing regressive views.
This little girl’s swimsuit. Sania Mirza’s skirt on the tennis field….same thing. Just the kind of burning issues we should get riled up about!
It’s sad how politicised everything is becoming. Instead of progressive attitudes everyone is becoming even more narrow minded. Both Priyanka and Deepika were trolled and I was trolled for commenting and protesting on how these days everyone is labelled something even with their choice of clothes.
These things are done by petty and small minded individuals who don’t have better things to do with their lives. I find it laughable that people have a separate set of values for the month of Ramzan and another set for the rest of the year. Also, by their own disturbing logic, those people were ‘looking’ at her image during Ramzan, which they shouldn’t be either!
It’s plain simple bullying. And we do not need to take it. What we wear, when we wear is our choice. As far as trolling is concerned, engaging trolls is a huge waste of time. They don’t get to decide who I am and what I do.
Religion is a personal choice. Let us give people that personal space. Trolls anyway are a sign of immaturity.
