Saif Ali Khan-starrer Chef, a remake of the American comedy-drama by the same name directed by Jon Favreau, released yesterday. Food-related movies in Bollywood have been few and far between, so it’s no surprise that our chefs here get excited each time a movie like that comes out. City chefs tell After Hrs about their favourite food movies and the appeal it has for them...

Mihir Bijur, Co-owner, Door No. 1

I have a lot of favourite movies that revolve around food, like The Lunchbox, Chocolat, Ratatouille, and others. However, the one that touched my heart was Stanley Ka Dabba, where it’s food that takes you on an emotional journey through a child’s life, and how it affects his mind, heart and soul; leaving your mind, heart and soul pondering by the end of it. It leaves you with a newfound respect for food and relationships alike. Very few movies have managed such a huge emotional impact with a relatively simple storyline.

Saransh Goila, Celebrity Chef

I really love Ratatouille because it proves that anybody can cook. Also, that there are no boundaries when it comes to love for food and everybody connects over it. They took a rat, which is totally despised in the kitchen and beautifully converted it into a character, which everybody fell in love with. So, I think, the point that food is about simplicity, love and is just about getting the simple flavour right comes from the movie and how food can mean a lot to a lot of people.

Rachel Goenka, Founder & CEO of The Chocolate Spoon Company

I saw Ratatouille when I was 19 and I was still studying communications at the university. That movie romanticised cooking and creating for me and I could totally relate to Remy every time something just worked for him. The description of food going way beyond food and the way the entire movie was just scripted to imbibe that passion throughout just stuck with me. Till today, it’s my favourite movie. Oh, and the soundtrack’s awesome as well!

Atul Kochhar, Owner and Head Chef, NRI and Lima

Burnt is my favourite movie because it reminds me of the passion we chefs live and die for. It’s a real reminder of some of the bigger problems we face in the industry —drugs and alcoholism. And then its humble ending that teamwork wins you anything you want, provided one remains humane and humble about it.

Chef Clyde Comello, Chef De Cuisine THEORY

My favourite food movie is Burnt starring Bradley Cooper. It’s a film I have watched many times. The movie is about the struggle of a chef who was at the top of his game, becomes a bad boy who goes through a low phase, and picks himself up to glory again. It shows how chefs devote their lives to being perfect and attain their stars which mean the world to them.

Jehangir Jamula Corporate Chef, Lord of the Drinks

I really loved the movie Cheeni Kum. Firstly, it portrayed a chef’s life truly as per our industry. The movie showed how a chef’s only passion and love is his food and his restaurant and how chefs end up making their professional and personal lives one. Sometimes, even the personal life becomes his restaurant.

Chef Farrokh Khambata, Umame, Joss, Cafe At the NCPA and Amadeus

My favourite food movie of all times would have to be The Hundred Foot Journey. The story is based on the Kadam family, who leaves India for France, where they open a restaurant directly across the road from Madame Mallory’s Michelin-starred eatery. It reminds me of my time cooking in France, where I started my career as a novice. It takes me back to my humble beginnings and initial struggles as I took my first few steps towards my culinary dream and towards new beginnings.
