Turkey is generally served on Thanksgiving Day, which always falls on the fourth Thursday of November. But in Bollywood, it was delivered earlier this year — on November 8, in the form of Thugs Of Hindostan (TOH). The much-anticipated Amitabh Bachchan-Aamir Khan-Katrina Kaif and Fatima Sana Shaikh-starrer opened on a historic note, netting Rs 49 cr (Hindi) at the domestic box office, but below average content saw the footfalls dropping drastically every passing day since then.

While everyone’s got their fangs into the Vijay Krishna Acharya directorial, it’s not the first time that a turkey has been served during Diwali. Given that the festival of lights is considered one of the best holidays for a movie’s release, this debacle has come as a shock to those who bet their monies on TOH.

Veteran trade analyst Taran Adarsh maintains that the festival can be blamed neither for a film’s failure nor can it be credited for the success. “The festive holiday only boosts a movie if the content is good. If the film is bad, no festival can save it,” he says, adding, “Just last Diwali, we had a huge hit in Golmaal Again. On the other hand, movies like Sanju, Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety, Raazi and Stree, which came during the non-festival period this year, worked big time. Years ago, RA.One opened big, but it couldn’t sustain as the audiences didn’t approve of the content.”

Reiterating that TOH created a new record with its phenomenal opening, he says, “Amitabh Bachchan and Aamir Khan coming together for the first time, Diwali mood, huge buzz, increased ticket prices and block as well as advance bookings saw that it opened huge. After that, the collections have only been falling, the drop on Monday is so drastic that it’s shocking. On second thoughts, it’s not all that shocking because the content was below average.”
