Kareena Kapoor Khan reinterpreted the classic tuxedo last week by teaming it with a pair of ripped denims and sneakers. She completed her look with a pair of sunnies and an Hermès handbag. Softening the formality of the Balmain evening jacket, she made it a chic daytime staple by clubbing it with ripped denims and a basic tee. Bebo’s laidback and street-inspired take on the Parisian classic is refreshing and can easily be incorporated in one’s personal style. We got designers to share their take on the daytime tuxedo.
It’s crucial to remember that if you have a tux that’s a statement piece, wear a basic top and vice versa. Designer Suman B of label Lola suggests wearing a tuxedo with a pair of shorts, skorts or culottes. “Team it with elements of your personal style like statement accessories or just minimal delicate jewellery with a smart wristwatch. You can simply throw on a pair of heels and take your look from day to night,” says Suman.
She attributes this runway trend to people’s growing love for culture, vintage, handmade and contemporary. “Today these words have become synonymous with luxury. The folklore vibe is fabulous and designers have transformed it into quintessential high fashion. It adds an element of fun to one’s wardrobe yet doesn’t scream out loud. You can wear a folklore-inspired shirt with white ripped denims or a maxi dress, it has the potential to make its way into everyone’s personal closet no matter how diverse their individual styles maybe,” she adds.
Designer Urvashi Joneja seconds that. “Tuxedo jackets are one of the most versatile separates, be it travel or a day out. It’s cool to pair it with a graphic printed dress, a t-shirt dress, shorts or a white shirt,” she says.
A classic black tux worn over a chanderi black sari with piled up antique Amrapali jewels is the ultimate formula to channel your desi goth. Designer Aniket Satam opines that a tuxedo when paired with tailored city shorts and a feminine-frilled white blouse works best for the lunch date with your girls. “A classic waist or tank in neutral white or black with layered pendant necklaces and ankle-length denims with nude pumps is the perfect PTA outfit for glam mamas,” he suggests.
