Last week at a red carpet event, a lot of our Bollywood couples showed up in coordinated outfits — Arjun and Mehr Rampal were seen twinning in matching monochromes, Aftab Shivdasani wore a midnight blue suit that offset the cobalt blue of wife Nin’s gown and Shreyas Talpade’s white jacket was the perfect accompaniment to wife Deepti’s off-shoulder number.

At the Ambani bash, Sridevi and Boney Kapoor were seen in matching blue tones and at a society wedding, Abhishek Kapoor matched his blue pocket square with the blue embroidery on wife Pragya’s outfit. Insta sensations Bipasha Basu and hubby Karan Singh Grover have elevated twinning into a fine craft. They’ve been seen working out in similar printed gym attires and have taken this trend even to the red carpet. A lot of couples have also evolved this idea into a fine brunch style — a few weeks ago, Akshay Kumar wore a white and blue combo, which complemented wife Twinkle’s blue dress and Shahid Kapoor matched his sporty blue separates to wife Mira’s boho, printed tunic. Tiger Shroff and Disha Patani, too, subconsciously have fallen prey to this alluring trend.

While mostly couples who dress in coordinated ensembles (it could be colours, print or cuts) look charming, at times, they may come across as a tad silly and trying too hard. A case in point being Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears (circa 2001) at American Music Awards dressed like identical twins sporting head-to-toe denim ensembles. The idea of twinning works when it’s effortless and happens without putting in too much thought or effort.

“Colour-coordinated couples can be a cringe-worthy sight if either of them is supremely uncomfortable carrying a particular shade. ‘Match-much’ kills the whole point of dressing up. Instead of going the shade-card-perfection way, couples should pick one element and play with it rather than cloning each other and looking like an awkward twin-set. Twinning is for teens and looks cooler in gender-neutral silhouettes, not in everything,” says designer Aniket Satam.

Reflects same mental wavelength

One’s sartorial pick reflects one’s state of mind. And couples twinning prove that there’s some level of harmony and they’re on the same page. Stylist Isha Bhansali observes that as a couple you do same activities most of the time. “How we dress is directly proportional to our state of mind. When Britney and Justin twinned like tweedledee tweedledum in 2001, it just didn’t work out,” says Isha.

Power couple dressing

Bollywood actress Anushka Sharma and ace cricketer Virat Kohli have often shown cohesive dressing on the red carpet. They may not have twinned, but there’s something about their dressing which stands out. Designer Shruti Sancheti recalls, “A while ago, Anushka was seen in a Nikhil Thampi pantsuit while Virat wore a sharp suit and I felt, it was the most potent form of power dressing. They looked every bit the power couple — reflecting the best of cricketing and cinema worlds. As far as Akshay Kumar and Twinkle Khanna are concerned, their twinning may have been a coincidence, but one can safely assume that couples like Bipasha Basu and Karan Singh Grover put a lot of thought into their attire. Also, some society events entail a cohesive dress code but when it’s too matchy-matchy all the time, then I don’t like it.”
