From The Joker to Chucky and Hannibal Lecter, over the years, a number of nightmare-inducing characters have dominated the screens. And with Halloween on October 31, there’s no better time to revisit some of our favourites. After Hrs quizzed various prominent personalities about who gives them the chills. Here’s what they had to say...

Bipasha Basu, actor

I love Blackbeard’s ghost because I think it’s the cutest ghost ever.

Shamita Shetty, actor

I love The Joker from The Dark Knight Rises. The brilliant Heath Ledger took a fictional character and made him seem all too real! He doesn’t try to scare anyone, it is his personality and twisted sense of logic that is scary.

Gautam Rode, actor

Frankenstein because he has such an interesting origin. He was created by a scientist and he is a monster created by mankind. It’s a story with some thought rather than just a ghost going around trying to scare people.

Prachi Desai, actor

My favourite spooky character recently has been Pennywise from IT. A shapeshifting demon, who feeds on your fear, is more than enough but when you make it a clown, it doesn’t take much time for it to get under your skin and destroy you emotionally.

Rohit Roy, actor

Damien from Omen is definitely my favourite horror character. I remember I wasn’t allowed to see the film when it first released. Later, when I did see it, I was terrified! Such a sweet, cherubic child instilling such horror was spine-chilling. I don’t think I saw another horror film for a long time after that.

Ali Fazal, actor

I would say Annabelle, hands down. I don’t know if we can call it one, as she’s a doll. But if she has the capabilities to kill people, then yes.

Dino Morea, actor

Chucky and The Joker played by Heath Ledger. Chucky because he’s straight out a super scary kid. That face can make anyone jump out of their seats or pee in their pants. The Joker because of the evil menace that he is.

Sucheta Sharma James, model

I love the vibe of Halloween — cold, dark and silent. My favourite character would be The Joker. I feel we have all these Jokers all around who want to harm others just for fun. But for every Joker, we have a Batman, Robin, and Catwoman to battle him.

Aamir Ali, actor

I don’t watch a lot of horror films, but my favourite supernatural character is that played by Patrick Swayze from the movie Ghost. I know it’s not a scary character, but I loved the emotion behind it.

Clint Fernandes, make-up expert

I loved Casper as a kid. As an adult, I’d say Hannibal Lecter, he was the epitomy of horror. Ghosts may or may not exist, but this is a human who is that sort of character that you fear and are intrigued by. I loved the Hannibal series, great art direction that made something so grotesque still beautiful.

Dabboo Ratnani, photographer

I like The Joker from Batman. The Joker is very charismatic yet completely unpredictable. He is an exceptionally intelligent man. There is this wicked humour lying at the core of this character that you can’t help but envy. I think his outfits and make-up is very cool, too! I like the way he uses colours in his wardrobe.

Hard Kaur, singer

My favourite spooky character is Chucky because he’s scary yet he makes me laugh. Little tiny monster.

Vicky Kaushal, actor

As a child, I was always spooked by the Addams Family... all of them. Their lean, bony structure, white poker faces, their twisted behaviour, they even had a spooky house!

Maria Goretti, television personality

I would say Morticia from the Addams Family because she is so classy and sexily spooky.

Shenaz Treasurywala, actor

I would say Hannibal Lecter from Silence of The Lambs, because of his various dialogues such as “I’m having an old friend for dinner. Yummy! Scared yet?”

Rithvik Dhanjani, actor

I like Anabelle as it’s the most spooky character that really stands out. And the entire idea of the ghost in the doll is scarier than the gruesome ghosts we usually see in movies.

Karan Patel, actor

It’s got to be Casper for the simple reason that as spooky as he gets, he is also quite a loveable character and has a good heart. I also quite like Morticia Addams and Uncle Fester from the Addams Family.

Suvigya Sharma, artist

My most recent favourite character is Joker played by Jared Leto in Suicide Squad. His character was just mind-boggling. He was extremely overpowering whenever he was in the frame. He was full of energy and charisma. This was the character that I really enjoyed after Heath Ledger’s Joker in The Dark Knight

Ishq Bector, singer and composer

My favorite spooky character is KRK (Kamaal R Khan), because he’s a zombie that eats brains for dinner. That’s scary!

Ohaila Khan, designer

The Madhatter from Alice in Wonderland. Although a little eccentric, I feel he has this cool eclectic style. I feel like he’s into collectibles from scarves to hats, fancy China for high tea. I like the finer details of his character, personality and styling too. I just love his entire vibe!
