A blow-by-blow account of the Bollywood fashionista and her entrepreneur husband’s caviar-soaked nuptials
Actress and style icon Sonam Kapoor has finally settled down with long-time boyfriend, businessman Anand Ahuja. The Kapoor and Ahuja families opted for an intimate wedding. While for the last few days, celebrations were on in full swing at Anil Kapoor’s abode — Shringar — for the wedding, the whole band, baaja, baaraat moved to Sonam’s aunt, Kavita Singh’s plush bungalow Rockdale on Bandstand.
The couple tied the knot in a traditional Anand Karaj ceremony. Day before yesterday, the Guru Granth Sahib was brought from the Golden Temple in Amritsar for the occasion and the newly-weds were blessed after the ceremony. The dress code for the afternoon wedding was Indian traditional, which saw the creme of B-Town showing up in their vibrant best. Minimal embellishments, floral embroideries, Art Deco motifs and a pastel palette dominated the soiree. While Sonam’s bestie Jacqueline Fernandez cut a fine figure with a statement parandi tied into her Mississippi-long braided mane, sis Rhea picked a printed and embroidered Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla creation.
WHO WORE WHAT?
Not surprisingly, Sonam looked resplendent in a custom-made red and golden lehenga by designer Anuradha Vakil. Staying true to her penchant for vintage textiles, the style maven accessorised her bridal look with a choker, a guttapusalu necklace and a multi-stranded matha patti.
Dapper groom Anand’s beige bandhgala was designed by Raghavendra Rathore. Anil Kapoor and Harshvardhan Kapoor, too, opted for ensembles from RR. While the former chose an off-white kurta, the latter picked a pink kurta and layered it with a grey jacket.
A FLORAL AFFAIR
Given that the couple had an Anand Karaj wedding, they didn’t have a shamiana or mandap, like other Indian weddings. A source tells us, “It happened in the living room itself. There was a puja and then, both Anand and Sonam exchanged their wedding vows.” The interior of the bungalow was decorated with mogra flowers. “Along with the flowers, it was British perfumer Jo Malone’s first Indian wedding. The fragrance used for the interiors was picked by Sonam herself. She’s a huge fan of mogra, so everything was designed according to her taste.” The families also arranged for an Indian menu comprising Mughlai food and dishes that are famous in different parts of the country.
WHO WERE IN ATTENDANCE
The wedding was attended by the couple’s close friends and colleagues from the industry. Apart from the family members - Boney Kapoor, Arjun Kapoor, Anshula Kapoor, Janhvi Kapoor, Khushi Kapoor, Sanjay Kapoor and wife Maheep Kapoor with their kids, and Mohit Marwah, Amitabh Bachchan along with Abhishek Bachchan and Shweta Bachchan Nanda and to wish the newlyweds. Aamir Khan, Kiran Rao and Rani Mukerji reached the venue just in time for the marriage ceremony. Sonam's closest buddies also made it to the do. Kareena Kapoor Khan walked in with Saif Ali Khan and baby Taimur in tow. They were all twinning, with Bebo wearing a pale pink Anita Dongre outfit. Sister Karisma Kapoor also accompanied the couple. Among her other friends, there was Jacqueline Fernandez who stood out in a pink Anita Dongre lehenga, while Swara Bhasker was a vision in a blue Abu-Sandeep ensemble. Karan Johar stunned in a heavily embroidered pink bandhgala, whereas Ranveer Singh adorned an elegant white ensemble teamed with a white Nehru jacket.
THE RECEPTION
The Kapoors and Ahujas headed to The Leela, in the evening for the wedding reception. It was an evening of dance and music to celebrate Sonam and Anand. The who's who from the industry attended the reception in their fashionable best.
