'Shubh Mangal Saavdhan': Ayushmann Khuranna-Bhumi Pednekar remind us of India's middle class hypocrisy surrounding sex

'Shubh Mangal Saavdhan' is a reminder of how our parents want us to get married, have sex and produce babies but S.E.X word remains a taboo

'Alibaba Ko gufa tak pahoncha kar he rehna', This is what bride's mother played by Seema Pahwa says to her husband when they find out about groom's erectile dysfunction. And groom's father says, 'mera beta hai, iska kuch bhi nanha sa nahi ho sakta'

This sums up the sentiment of Friday release, 'Shubh Mangal Saavdhan'. The film is a love story of Sugandha and Mudit who are all set for a love-cum-arrange marriage when Ayushmann Khuranna's character finds out about his erectile dysfunction, he tries his best to find a cure, visits all doctors and Bangali Babas but nothing helps. Soon the bride and groom's family gets involved but as the tag line 'Stand up for love' suggests...love conquers all in the end.

Shubh Mangal Saavdhan is yet another middle class film. And one discussing rather boldly the issues which are commonly regarded as taboo. The biggest such subject is... yes you guessed it- SEX! While the awkward talk of birds and bees never really takes place between fathers and sons, the talk between mothers and daughters isn't any less awkward. The film has lots of such double meaning conversations, which will make you laugh throughout the film. Will even remind you of elderly aunties' conversations at ladies sangeet or ladies giggling away sheepishly at kitty parties while discussing their sex lives. Seema Pahwa in the role of Bhumi Pednekar's mother is amazing. She embodies the stereotypical Indian mother who wants her daughter to get married, have sex, produce babies but will always feel shy to talk about 'sex' (reminded me of an aunt who asked her newly married daughter about 'mating')

But when the mother decides to have the important conversation before beti's wedding, she is awkward  to the extent that Bhumi's character says, "Mummy rehne do Sex toh Bola nahi jaata aapse, khaakh education doge aap" But she still has to do what's needed. The dialogue when Seema Pahwa explains her daughter about losing virginity on the night of marriage appears as awkward and as uncomfortable as any parent-child conversation conversation about sex could get. She says, " Aurat ka shareer ek khazaana hai jo band guffa mein rehta hai. Aur ye guffa chalis choron ke liye nahi, but sirf ek liye khulti hai. Alibaba ke liye".  If that's not enough, she tells Sugandha about the importance of low cut deep blouses and how 'L se Lingerie' is more important than 'L se Lehanga'.

For all those who don't count 'Masti' franchise or 'Kya Kool Hai Hum's adult jokes as sex education. 'Shubh Mangal Saavdhan' is a mainstream Bollywood film talking about the erectile dysfunction just the way any regular household would discuss.

A loud round of applause for Ayushmann Khuranna for standing up for men and their sexual issues. In one of the dialogues he says "Mard woh nahi jisko dard nahi hota, balki woh hai jo kisi ko dard nahi deta aur dene deta" He debuted in the role of sperm donor in 'Vicky Donor' and now is talking about  performance anxiety among men with full gusto. 'Dum Laga Ke Haisha' jodi of Bhumi-Ayushmann has an amazing chemistry in this one too and the supporting cast adds all the drama needed in this usual wedding chaos seen before.

'Shubh Mangal Saavdhan' merits a watch for more than one reasons.
