Putting together a red carpet appearance is the job of the stylist these days. But think of some of the most effortlessly stylish men in Bollywood — at a time when there were no stylists around — and Jackie Shroff’s name is sure to be right up there somewhere! With his bandhgalas, bandhani, tie-and-dye shirts and trademark scarf around his neck, the veteran actor has been looked up to for his unconventional choices when it comes to his clothing and style.
In the actor’s case, however, fashion wasn’t exactly up on the priority list during his youth. “I was a skinny, odd-looking boy,” he shares, “We didn’t have much money to buy clothes. So, I would fashion a shirt out of mom’s old sari or get a trouser stitched out of the extra fabric from a curtain. So, it was all about mix-and-match and people started noticing and appreciating it — nobody had seen a shirt or pant made of curtains!” he guffaws. Now, of course, the actor wears clothes he’s comfortable in. “I like my boots and my jackets. I believe it’s the way you carry yourself that matters the most. So many people sport jeans, but it’s how you wear them that makes all the difference,” he avers.
Whom does Jackie find the most stylish among the younger lot? He says, “When it comes to Indian wear, I like Shraddha Kapoor and Disha Patani can pull off both, western and Indian, with elan.” His all-time favourite, though, remains Madhuri Dixit-Nene for the way she carries any outfit and that million dollar-smile that elevates everything she wears. “Wear anything, but never forget to wear your smile,” the actor says. As for the men, besides his son Tiger Shroff, who he thinks looks dapper when he dresses up for any occasion, thanks to his good physique, it’s Varun Dhawan whom he finds stylish as he’s an easy-dresser. “But Danny Dengzongpa is the coolest and most stylish of the whole lot put together!” he concludes.
