Even though most filmmakers are, more often than not, known to write the movies they direct, Sanjay Leela Bhansali is one of those rare ones who also composes the soundtrack of his directorials. Considering that choreography has always been his strong point as he was also the associate director for songs in 1942: A Love Story, when he assisted Vidhu Vinod Chopra, one can’t help but wonder where the inspiration for his music comes from.

To that, the maker of magnum opuses like Goliyon Ki Raasleela: Ram-Leela

Bajirao Mastani and this year’s mammoth hit Padmaavat, says, “My music comes from constantly listening to Latabai (Mangeshkar), Ashabai (Bhosle), Mohammed Rafi saab, Kishore Kumar and all the greats. After listening to them, I come back and say how sad is my music. But I set the bar when I listen to these greats. My best part of music just comes... I don’t know Sa from Re to Ga to Ma.. All that I have heard over the years — Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, Ustad Aamir Khan saab, Roshan Ara Begum who moved to Pakistan.. my father had a collection — the influences have been huge.”

Admitting that he cannot do without music and that it is his soul, the auteur filmmaker adds, “Throughout the year when I’m planning my film, there’s a person playing the guitar and if something comes to my mind, I hum the tune and he records it and sees where it is going. All my songs happen as I have sung them. However, in the beginning while creating those compositions, we all wonder if anyone will understand them. Like Binte Dil in Padmaavat. When I first hummed the tune, I was wondering who would understand it. But when it released, it became the most popular audio release.”
