Social media presence has become a big part of every actor’s life in today’s times. While many of Rani Mukerji’s colleagues including Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan, Salman Khan and even cousin Kajol have mastered this beast, she has stayed away from it. When we met the actress recently to talk about her film projects, we quizzed her about her absence from social media, too. Here’s what she had to say...

WHAT PEOPLE WANT...

The Hichki actress hasn’t let her profession overpower her personal life. She says, “I think we (actors) are normal as normal can be. Acting is just a job for me. But I am who I am. Acting cannot be the entirety because I have my family, my friends. That’s why when people say, ‘Oh, you are not on social media’, I don’t fret. For me, those things are not the be all and end all. I feel that if I, who didn’t want to be an actor, have reached where I have and have worked for 23 years, it means people have loved me for who I am on screen. They haven’t liked me for what I wear to an award function or to the airport, or when I am on a vacation. They love me for the characters that I have essayed and as long as I give my fans that, I don’t need to be seen or heard otherwise.”

THERE’S MORE TO LIFE THAN LIKES AND COMMENTS

Rani’s husband Aditya Chopra is known to be an extremely private person, too. But an actor’s availability on social networking platforms and the number of followers they have are often considered to be an indication of the extent of their popularity. Rani says, “I do understand that I may have limited my popularity (due to her absence from social-networking sites). I realise that probably on social media, it could’ve grown tenfold, but I choose to do this. I am as ambitious as I want to be. I know ke this is my chaddar aur mujhe pair itne hi failane hain. Those who do have that passion and drive, it’s great that they are doing it (being on social media).”

For the Mardaani actress, her passion besides her family is her work. “Once I get involved in a film, I am completely engrossed in it. What people are saying or commenting about me, doesn’t excite me. My life revolves around my roles. Right now, I am constantly thinking about how I can play Shivani Shivaji Roy differently from the way I did in Mardaani in its sequel as it’s the same character.”
