In an interview to Anupama Chopra's Film Companion, Rani Mukerji revisited her 2005 release Black and said, "Black is my only performance which I don't think I can better. With my other films I can have hundred issues... I could have done this scene in a better way, or that could be changed. Black is the only film that I don't think I will ever re-do any shot or do anything differently than what I did at that point."
It's been 13 years since Sanjay Leela Bhansali film Black starring Amitabh Bachchan and Rani Mukerji released. The film revolves around a blind and deaf girl (played by Rani Mukerji) and her relationship with her teacher played by Big B who himself later develops Alzheimer’s disease. Getting nostalgic about the film she shot for back in 2004, Rani also said, "I don't know how I did it' she continued, "'If someone told me to do Black today, I won't be able to do it'. For each film there is a time and Black came at a time in my career... there was some a kind of magic that happened during those months when we were shooting for the film. Even when Sanjay Leela Bhansali and I talk today, he also says that even he won't be able to do that film today. There was that time, that period, when all of us were so immersed in the world of Black. It all came so naturally. "
Making it sound like cakewalk, Rani even confessed that she didn't rehearse for those emotional scenes. Rani told FC, 'I don't think I even rehearsed for these scenes. There were all spontaneous scenes, mostly one takes, maximum I have gone to is three takes in Black. It was more of me getting into the zone of learning how to communicate through the sign language. I did a lot of rehearsing with that for about six seven months when I learnt the sign language with my scenes and my dialogues. It was all very organic and what I felt at that moment."
Now Rani Mukerji is making a comeback to movies after a four year long hiatus with Hichki. She plays a teacher who suffers from Tourette Syndrome, which is a kind of Tic Disorder that involves involuntary and repetitive movements (motor) and vocalisations (vocal/phonic). The sufferer makes sudden movements (like blinking) or sounds (clearing throat repeatedly), which they can’t control. In Siddharth P Malhotra’s film, Rani is ridiculed and rejected because of her condition but she overcomes it while teaching a group of teenagers who are shunned by the society. The film is all set to release on March 23rd 2018.
