While Akshay Kumar is being lauded for the important message his film Pad Man delivers, the social media campaign which saw big Bollywood stars pose with a sanitary napkin has stirred a debate. Not just the reel Pad Man, Twinkle Khanna, Radhika Apte, Sonam Kapoor posed with a pad but even Alia Bhatt, Aamir Khan, Anil Kapoor, Katrina Kaif, Anushka Sharma, Varun Dhawan and so many others did their bit to give an important message on the stigma around periods.

Social media has been divided over the Pad Man Challenge and even comedian Mallika Dua called it a marketing gimmick and wastage of pads.  But lead actress Radhika Apte has stepped out and defended the attempt made by actors to create awareness about periods. In an interview to Mumbai Mirror she said, "Actors are not social activists; they have a job called acting. The whole purpose behind this film initially was the fact that the actual story of Arunachalam Muruganathan is absolutely inspiring. This inspiring story is about sanitary napkins. In our country and around the world, menstruation is considered a taboo and we should do something about it. She further added, ""The fact that the whole industry is coming together for this is overwhelming," she added.

Earlier Mallika Dua took to social media and wrote, "I whole heartedly support the idea of a movie like Pad Man and the fact that it is being helmed by massive film star and will attract a huge screen audience. Because that's the only way cinema will de-stigmatise mensuration for the masses that look at it as a hawwww thing. It's the Instagram challenge that's wasting pads, targeting the wrong audience and masking itself as a movement when all it is a marketing gimmick that I find stupid. I hope and pray the movie does exceeding well, reaches and teaches people and brings about the change that only cinema has the power to bring. "

Radhika Apte hit back at all those who pointed fingers at the Pad Man challenge and said, "Trying to find fault in that (Padman challenge) and asking us (actors) to become social workers, I think they really need to focus on their work and should not waste time talking about things. Everyone is doing what they can do and they have a profession as well." She further told Mumbai Mirror, "You are nobody to judge and by putting a photograph to support a film, people are doing what you can do. I think it is too easy to point a finger at somebody else and say what they are not doing. It is about you asking a question to yourself what you are doing for anything?"
