The one question that journalists have been persistently asking Rajkumar Hirani is: when will the next Munna Bhai film happen? The first two instatements - Munna Bhai MBBS and Lage Raho Munna Bhai - still remain two of the most loved comedy films of Bollywood.

The director finally answered the question in a recent interview with Outlook. “We wanted to do the third Munna Bhai film and even wrote a lot of it, but we were not able to match the script with the first two. Now, I have found something, though we still have to write it,” he said.

In an earlier interview with PTI, Abhijat Joshi (the co-writer of both Munna Bhai films), had talked about the third part. “The toughest thing is to match up to what we did in Lage Raho Munna Bhai. We are looking at something that will match the standards of ‘Lage Raho…’. We have an idea in place. It is something new and different,” said Abhijat.

It's a well known fact that Sanjay Dutt always wanted to make his comeback into Bollywood with a Munna Bhai film but Hirani decided to go ahead with Ranbir Kapoor's 'Sanju', a biopic on Sanjay Dutt's life. Hirani revealed that Sanjay even joked about it to Aamir Khan: “Once, when Sanjay met Aamir, he told him, ‘Raju Munna Bhai nahin likh raha hai, meri kahaani likh raha hai. And the latter joked, ‘Tumne usko batayi kyun? Usko woh zyada interesting lagi hogi.’”

Talking about the unbelievable resemblance of Ranbir with him, Sanjay had earlier told DNA, "Maine is picture ke scenes dekhe hain and I can't believe how Ranbir is looking like me. Raju (Rajkumar Hirani), Munna Bhai mein Ranbir ko mat le lena, samjha?"

Talking about the success of the two films, Hirani said, “We were all new and naive at the time. While we were filming Munna Bhai MBBS, we didn’t think we were doing some kind of mainstream cinema. I only knew that I was doing a different kind of cinema. More than its commercial success, it fetched us a lot of love and affection from people. I was happy that my family and friends saw it. That joy itself was enough. Never in my life had I thought of anything like this.”
