It’s not often that a film is able to successfully match up to the high benchmarks of critical acclaim and a festival audience. However, two time National Award-winning actor Manoj Bajpayee’s psychological drama Gali Guleiyan (In The Shadows) has done just that.
It has travelled to more than 23 top International Film Festivals, including Busan International Film Festival, MAMI, 42nd Cleveland International Film Festival, the Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles, Atlanta Film Festival, the New York Indian Film Festival and the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne.
The trailer showcased Manoj’s heart-wrenching portrayal of a man (Khuddus) trapped within the alleys of old Delhi and his own mind, who attempts to break free to find a human connection. He is ably supported by Ranvir Shorey, Neeraj Kabi and Shahana Goswami and child actor Om Singh. Shot at real locations, it is helmed by Los Angeles-based filmmaker and winner of Directors Guild of America Award, Dipesh Jain.
Manoj says, “I’m overwhelmed by the response. The adulation that we are getting after our special screenings has been fantastic. This is perhaps one of the most complex, layered and challenging roles that I’ve played. Kudos to Dipesh, who despite being a newcomer, came up with such a great idea, made this challenging film and has taken it to festivals across the world.”
Dipesh exclaims, “When Shuchi (my sister and producer) and I started this journey, we felt that it was a bold and risky story especially for a debut film. But this story is close to our hearts and takes you into the depths of human mind as well as the emotions. In many ways, it’s an ode to my growing up years in the alleys of Old Delhi, to my personal fears and a feeling of entrapment that I had experienced as a child.”
