Kedarnath, starring Sara Ali Khan and Sushant Singh Rajput, released on December 7
Abhishek Kapoor's 'Kedarnath' starring debutante Sara Ali Khan and Sushant Singh Rajput, finally hit the screens on December 7. The film opened to mixed reviews. While Sara and Sushant's performances have been applauded, the film's slow-paced story line has been criticised.
Despite being the solo Bollywood release of the week, 'Kedarnath' registered a moderate opening of around Rs 7 crore, as reported by Boxofficeindia.com.
Sara failed to beat her contemporary Janhvi Kapoor's debut film Dhadak's Day 1 collections. The Shashank Khaitan directorial's first day numbers were reviewed as 'heroic' as it went on to become the highest opening newcomer movie with Rs 8.71 Cr. The record was previously hed by the Dharma productions' 'Student Of The Year'.
Sara's film faced tough competition from Rajinikanth and Akshay Kumar's sci-fi thriller, '2.0', it seems. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh wrote on Twitter, "2.0 stayed strong, despite a new release [Kedarnath] eating into the screens, shows and footfalls... Expected to show substantial growth on second Sat and Sun... Will cross Rs 150 cr today... [Week 2] Fri 5.85 cr. Total: Rs 145.60 cr. India biz. Note: HINDI version."
Talking about the prospects of the film at the box office before its release, film exhibitor Akshaye Rathi had earlier told Hindustantimes.com, “On the business front, Kedarnath should bring around Rs 5 crore on day one and then it would entirely depend on the merit of the film’s content. Since there is no star like Salman, Shah Rukh or Ranbir who can draw the audience on face value, it’s a film which is as good as its content.”
“If you go by what we have seen of Sara Ali Khan in her interviews, public appearances, reality shows, Koffee With Karan and everywhere else, a lot of people are clearly very excited about this new young talent that has ..arrived. Lots of people are looking forward to the launch of Sara Ali Khan and that may possibly become the USP of the film," he had added.
