Last week, Shraddha Kapoor put the spotlight back on colour blocking as she showed up in an Aniket Satam blocked striped trench dress. A few days later, Kareena Kapoor Khan was seen sporting a multi-hued striped tracksuit at the gym and Sonam K Ahuja was seen rocking a beige and white striped twin set at the airport. Block stripes have emerged as the new urban classic and its recurrent surfacing every season in a new avatar makes them a B-Town staple. Designer Aniket Satam, who custom-made Shraddha’s trench, says, “I reimagined the classic pattern in the form of college stripes mimicking the retro varsity uniforms. It’s more on the lines of Hogwarts chic and the dark palette works well for evening and day look.”
Playing with lines allows us to create new visual graphics by changing its direction according to style lines. Stylist Divyak D’Souza says, “Colour blocking has always been a Bollywood mainstay. Sometimes it pops up in workwear and other times in the athleisure zone. A sign of ’90s fashion’s revival, the T-shirt with stripes teamed with a pair of high-waist denims is having a moment of sorts.”
It’s interesting how block bands penetrate the market in different ways. Stylist Isha Bhansali says, “I loved Aniket’s trench seen on Shraddha. I also gave a striped Cuban shirt to Rajkummar Rao for an outing. Thanks to Prada, block streaks continue to make their presence felt. It’s versatile and allows one to be experimental.”
