It was two days ago that Karan Johar dropped the bomb that he’d be taking up the massive period drama Takht, with a star cast so bright it could blind you. The movie will feature Ranveer Singh, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Alia Bhatt, Bhumi Pednekar, Vicky Kaushal, Janhvi Kapoor and Anil Kapoor. While he initially did reveal that the movie would be based in the Mughal period and concerns a war over the throne (possibly the one between Aurangzeb and Dara Shikoh), there is no confirmed news yet as to exactly who plays what.

Still, the director did give some details about the film. In an interview with Film Companion, Karan explained, “It’s about two warring brothers and it’s based on facts.” Speculations initially said that Ranveer would play the legendary Aurangzeb, although it’s now been confirmed that Vicky will play Aurangzeb and Ranveer will be essaying the role of Dara Shikoh, as the two battle over the throne.

While Karan has been known for creating relatable Bollywood family dramas like Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna, to name a few, he had an interesting comparison to make regarding Takht. “It’s like the K3G of the Mughal era. But it’s more extreme, there is more betrayal. It has the tropes of court politics. It’s so rich in texture.” is what he said, referring to one of his biggest successes, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham.

The director elaborated further on his cast for the film, saying, “It’s an unusual mix of talent. They are actors who have walked the parallel path, we have the superstar dynamic with Kareena, there’s Anil Kapoor who I have never directed before – but each actor fits the part to the tee. It’s not that I have gone to them because I have access. It’s a strange dichotomy. Each one has never played a part like this and yet each one fit it perfectly.”

Ranveer is no stranger to large-scale period pieces, having given some of the biggest successes of his career with such movies, helmed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. On being asked about being compared to Bhansali with his first historical film, Karan said, “I would be lying if I didn’t admit that the comparison is very challenging. I love Sanjay’s aesthetic. The comparison scares me but I hope I can find my own voice. I hope I’m not doomed by comparison.” The film will see a 2020 release.
