Come April 17, Abhishek Varman will present a casting coup of sorts, with Madhuri Dixit and Alia Bhatt in his period drama, Kalank. The two powerhouse performers are teaming up for the first time in Karan Johar’s production and when we caught up with them individually, theirs turned out to be a mutual admiration society.

‘Alia reminds me so much of myself’

Madhuri said, “It was wonderful to work with Alia. She has amazing energy; she reminds me so much of myself. She’s so professional, always on time, doing her job well and just wants to finish and go home. Alia comes with absolutely no baggage and that’s a wonderful trait.” The Total Dhamaal actress added, “What a brilliant actress she is! I don’t think we have seen someone as terrific as her in a long time. The choices she’s making are so powerful and meaningful. Alia has definitely changed the whole ball game.”

‘Madhuri ma’am was extremely supportive’

When we told Alia what the senior actress had to say about her, her face lit up and she said, “Madhuri ma’am is so sweet. Before I had begun the shoot, I was extremely nervous. Standing in the same frame, even thinking of matching up to her is impossible. But believe me, she made it so easy for all of us. She is lovely and we had a fantastic time shooting together. There’s Ghar More Pardesiya where I’m dancing around her and she’s thankfully not dancing. Otherwise, I would have just died.”

Given her dancing prowess, the diva guided the Gen-Y actor with her moves and expressions. Alia revealed, “I was a nervous wreck around her while we were filming the song. But she was extremely supportive. She didn’t do it because she felt that she needed to, I could sense that she really wanted to help. Madhuri ma’am is a teacher, she has her own dance app, which I have used myself. I could sense that she was aware of the difficulties I was having, without me having to voice them. That support and validation from her made me joyful. Even if I had to give another take, I’d still be happy because I had got my award when she said I did it wonderfully.”

‘I wish I could be as calm as her’

Alia revealed that the two had a great time, off the sets too, sharing quality time during lunch and breaks. “We were constantly chatting about our diets. We would share our meals. I had a lovely time working with her. She has such a calm demeanour and spreads peaceful energy around her. I wish I could be like her. I’m an anxious person. I can’t sit in one place. I’m impatient and tend to zone out a lot. But she just looks like she belongs there, which is also the reason why she is who she is,” the young star signed off.
