In 2018, you know you have arrived when you become the subject of memes galore. On Friendship Day, today, we look at friendships, both in real and reel life, which have inspired memes and found a place in pop culture.
BARACK OBAMA AND JOE BIDEN
Their dosti survived several ups and downs in the White House. From sharing a laugh to watching each other’s backs, their pictures speak volumes about the special bond they share. The memes capture that warmth in the form of conversations that they never had. Most of them talk about the times they shared in Washington DC as former President and Vice President of the United States of America.
SARTAJ SINGH AND KATEKAR (SACRED GAMES)
In the city’s dark underbelly, Sartaj and Katekar’s friendship is a silver lining. Katekar has Sartaj’s back, and is always on call, even when he is in bed with his wife. His dedication to his senior has translated into many memes including one that portrays his wife as the third wheel in an otherwise platonic relationship. While there is no romantic angle here, some pranksters have used it as a hook for #relationshipgoals idolising the way Katekar looks at Sartaj and portraying it as the way a partner should look at you in a relationship.
JON SNOW AND SAM TARLY (GAME OF THRONES)
This friendship started off with Jon protecting Sam, who was being bullied by men in the Night’s Watch. However, since then it’s Sam who has been Jon’s saviour. It’s he who tells Jon how dragon glass can kill their biggest foe — the White Walkers — and also finds out an important piece of information about Jon’s lineage (a question that has always hounded him). The two are the men in black or Crows — a term used to describe men of the Night’s Watch, and one that has also been used to immortalise their friendship in a meme.
TYRION LANNISTER AND BRONN (GAME OF THRONES)
They are the Calvin and Hobbes of the GOT world. Bronn knows that the Lannisters always pay their debts, and that’s one of the reasons why he pairs up with Tyrion, however, this materialistic bond later develops into a friendship. Tyrion has the brains, and Bronn has the muscle power. Together that combination is vital to the duo surviving the treacherous and cruel world of Westeros. It’s not only the audience that recognises that the duo is a perfect match, and their friendship and humourous banter is perfect fodder for the memes.
ELEVEN AND HER GANG (STRANGER THINGS)
Dustin, Mike, Will and Lucas are the awesome foursome in the world of Stranger Things. The band of four gets a boost when Eleven with her special powers enters their world. Together, they make for a great band of friends fighting against the monsters from the Upside Down that threaten the sleepy town of Hawkins. Their friendship is based on two tenets — friends can never lie to each other and never break a promise to each other. These principles are also reflected in the memes about them.
