Model-turned-actor John Abraham turned a producer in 2012 with Vicky Donor which went on to become a critical and commercial success. The film not just established Ayushmaan Khurrana as a mainstream Bollywood actor but also earned John a National Film Award in the category of Best Popular Film.

While the rest three of his productions : 'Madras Cafe', 'Force 2' and the latest one being 'Parmanu : The Story Of Pokhran', have him as the lead, John revealed in an EXCLUSIVE chat with DNA, why he won't feature in his next two productions and how does the actor within him resist the temptation of not taking up roles like that of say Vicky Arora from Vicky Donor.

John revealed that although he was being considered for the lead role in Vicky Donor, he chose to opt out of it for the larger good of the film.

"See, a lot stems out of the security that I have as a producer. There was talk of me being the cast in Vicky Donor, which was immediately thrown out of the window by me and thankfully Shoojit (Sircar), also. We called in Ayushmaan (Khurrana) into this office where we are sitting, and we both looked at each other, we smiled and said, ‘There is no better choice for this film than Ayushmaan.’ And he validated exactly what we said because he was beyond fantaaaa-stic in the film."

'If John Abraham is not the right cast, I am absolutely okay'

"As a producer, I power my production not necessarily with my star presence but with the right cast for a film. So, if John Abraham is not the right cast, I am absolutely okay. I have got a fantastic script which is a female oriented script and I am willing to meet every female actress worth her salt to make sure she is on board. Tomorrow, if a film suits Varun Dhawan I will go to him. Or if it suits Tiger (Shroff), I will go to him. Or if it suits Rajkummar Rao, I will go to him. Or if suits Ayushmaan again, I will go to him again. I am very clear! If I have to sit in the docks and wait, I don’t have a problem but I believe the film should have the right cast. That’s when you have a true blue production house when you are really thinking outside of yourself. That’s my biggest plus, I don’t really think about myself."

The Parmanu actor is aware of the fact that his decisions do get noticed by his younger fans

"I think, especially the younger lot, they see that. They are like, ‘This guy is cool man! He really doesn’t care to protect his own interests. He is like an open book.’"

John would not feature in his next two productions

"I will continue to do that in future. So the next two announcements that we are making, both of them don’t have me in it. But, the important thing is to reach out to the right cast. There are certain films that may require a smaller budget, while some may require bigger budgets , so will reach out to actors accordingly. I have no qualms in reaching out to anybody."
