White has never been taboo for designer duo Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla as their first chikankari bride was Shweta Bachchan Nanda over two decades ago. “It’s gratifying to see the industry following a trend we set then,” says Sandeep. Both Sonam K Ahuja and Deepika Padukone wanted to wear the classic chikankari ensembles by the celebrated couture label at their respective wedding events.

Not many know that Sonam had seen a multipanelled multi-hued chikankari lehenga in the AJSK book and wanted it to be the inspiration for her custom creation. The stylista had ordered her ensemble two years ago from the fashion house. And the rest is bridal history steeped in craftsmanship and timelessness.

The style-savvy Deepika, too, has been passionate about the label’s signature and painstakingly realised chikankari. “It was wonderful to design two ghagras, which were absolutely distinct for these magical women. Chikankari and creams, off-whites and beige are a personal favourite. We see chikankari as pristine perfection and an expression of craftsmanship at its most refined,” says Abu Jani. The label has a history of dressing several brides in cream, off white and ivory. “Not just in chikankari, but also zardozi, resham silk thread and mirrorwork on fabrics that range from georgette to khadi,” adds Sandeep.

THE HUE FOR THE NEW-AGE BRIDE

In the Indian scenario, festive shades like red, pink and maroon have always enjoyed immense popularity in the bridal sphere. However, now brides are gravitating towards a new palette. Today, it’s not difficult to spot fun brides and their entourage of bridesmaids in powder blue and pale pinks, which would have thrown an onlooker off-kilter a few years ago.

The transformative prowess of white mingled with gold, silver and bronze accent make it a winning combo for the pre and post-wedding festivities. White is a classic besides being season-less and trend-neutral and its interpretation in the recent bridal sartorial history has made it a go-to pick.

So it wasn’t surprising to see the new-age bride Priyanka Chopra breaking the rigid traditional palette and opting for a white Falguni and Shane Peacock ensemble for her reception.

“It was a collaborative process, Priyanka had given us her inputs which we improvised and created the couture for her which she absolutely loved. White has recently emerged as a significant colour for modern brides and it will continue to be a part of the bridal trend, for modern brides, who are unconventional with their choices,” says Falguni Peacock.

The classic white accented with gold and silver accents adds gravitas to brides personal style on their significant day. Stylist Eshaa Aminn hails whites and ivories as classic and timeless. “Ivory is always seen with some accent colour like gold or tassels and the overall vibe is pristine,” says Eshaa.

White may be sparkling in the bridal galaxy now, but that wasn’t the case back in the day. Fifteen years ago, for her sister’s mehendi function, when stylist Isha Bhansali wanted to wear white, she got a thumbs down from her family. “Back then white wasn’t accepted. It’s such a pure and a beautiful colour and I am happy it’s being accepted,” says Isha.
