From period dramas to biopics, the year 2019 looks promising. And after the boom of the digital platform, now more film stars are poised to make the transition. A peek into what is coming up this year.

Historicals/period dramas

History is being relived in all its glory on 70 mm. If Padmaavat got the cash registers rolling last year, 2019 will see nearly half-a-dozen historicals hitting the screens starting with Kangana Ranaut starrer Manikarnika: The Queen Of Jhansi on the Republic weekend. March will see the 1897 Battle of Saragarhi on the silver screen with Akshay Kumar stepping into the shoes of Havildar Singh who led a battalion of Sikh soldiers against Pashtun Orakzai tribesmen. Ajay Devgn has chosen to bring to life the glory of the brave Maratha warrior Tanaji Malusare in Tanaaji: The Unsung Warrior, which releases in November. Another period drama is the multi-starrer Kalank, set in the 1940s.

Being sporty

Last year, two sports biopics — Gold and Soorma — hit the bull’s eye. No wonder then, that now Ranveer Singh, Ajay Devgn, Shahid Kapoor are out to showcase their sporting skills. Ranveer plays Kapil Dev in ’83, a film based on India’s first cricket World Cup win, while Shraddha Kapoor has been upping her badminton skills to essay Saina Nehwal, and Harshvardhan Kapoor is learning to aim and shoot for his role as professional shooter Abhinav Bindra.

Women on top

Women-centric movies this year will take centre stage. Apart from her Rani Jhansi biopic, Kangana Ranaut will also turn sporty with Panga, as a Kabaddi player. Meanwhile, Padukone will be seen in Chapaak, a biopic of Laxmi Agarwal, an acid attack survivor. That’s not all, the one film-old Janhvi Kapoor has started prepping for the role as India’s first women Air Force Pilot Gunjan Saxena. Taapsee Pannu and Bhumi Pednekar will soon start shooting for Womaniya.

Content-driven

2018 saw that content was king with films like Badhaai Ho, Stree and AndhaDhun. The coming year will see more such content-driven films starting with Uri: The Surgical Strike toplined by last year’s critical darling Vicky Kaushal. Rajkummar Rao will be back with an unconventional romcom Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga. He will also be seen in Made In China and Mental Hai Kya, which are black comedies. Ayushmann Khurrana whose forte is slice-of-life films has Dreamgirl, which has him playing a call centre employee.

‘Net’ting it

The year 2018 saw Saif leading the way for OTT platforms by signing up for Sacred Games. Now, while R Madhavan and Amit Sadh made their digital debuts with Breathe, for the second season, Abhishek Bachchan has been roped in. Others who will be seen foraying into the digital platform are Arjun Rampal with The Final Call, Arshad Warsi with Asura and Manoj Bajpayee with The Family Man
